Data Strategy Project
Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador face unique challenges for collecting and analyzing data. There may be a lack of capacity or resources within Indigenous communities to collect and analyze data, as well as concerns around data privacy and security due to the history of colonization and marginalization that Indigenous communities have experienced, which can make it challenging to implement a data strategy.
Our data strategy project aims to develop and implement a cultural informed data strategy with Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador through engagement with community members, prioritizing privacy and confidentiality, and using culturally appropriate methods and protocols for data collection and use that respect the privacy and confidentiality of individuals and communities, as well as advocating for policies and funding that support Indigenous-led research and data collection.
A data strategy can help Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador make informed decisions through data collection and analysis. It can identify community needs and priorities, monitor progress towards goals and outcomes, and identify opportunities for collaboration. A data strategy is essential for accessing funding and resources for Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador since some funding agencies require data to support funding applications, and ensures that necessary data is available. Collected data can help communities demonstrate the impact of their programs and initiatives, identify areas where additional resources are needed, and make a stronger case for funding
A data strategy can:
Empower Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador by providing them with the necessary data to make informed decisions and advocate for their needs;
Help Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador monitor progress towards their goals and outcomes, allowing them to adapt and adjust their strategies as needed;
Help Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador identify opportunities for collaboration and partnership with other organizations and stakeholders.
